After midnight on March 10, 1941, Edmund Leonard responded to the sound of fire engines and left his job at the Hotel Bryant in Brockton to help fight the fire inside the Strand Theater, which cost 13 Brockton firefighters their lives. For further details as reported in The Enterprise, go to http://www.enterprisenews.com/homepage/x1905570655/Brockton-man-recalls-Strand-Hotel-fire

Ed is an active member of the Brockton Republican Ward 1 Committee. A former Brockton City Councilor, he was born in Brockton and has lived here all his life. A U.S. Navy veteran, Ed has taken part in annual memorials and has helped raise funds for the permanent Strand Theater fire memorial in Brockton.

Novak-Greene team is invincible!

At the March 7 election of officers, incumbents Novak and Greene were re-elected as Chairman and Vice Chairman. They are assured of being a strong leadership team for the next four years, backed up by William Pribusauskas as Second Vice Chairman and Janette Packard as Secretary.

Also re-elected were Peter Falcone, Treasurer, and Eleanor Claff, Corresponding Secretary.

The 1996 Bylaws of the Committee were re-approved for the next four years, but a committee was appointed to investigate possible revisions.

The following meetings have been planned for the City Committee, to be preceded by Ward meetings an hour earlier, at the azure facilities of Brockton High School, from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m. in each case:

May 21 - Speaker Jim Ogonowsky, candidate for the U. S. Senate;
June 18 - Speaker Brockton Mayor James Harrington.

Larry Novak seeks seat in Mass. House of Representatives

Chairman Novak has announced his candidacy for the State Representative seat being vacated by Thomas Kennedy. For further details, see http://www.enterprisenews.com/homepage/x2103875208

Mr. Novak has extensive political experience. He is a former member of the Brockton School Committee and is currently in his third 4-year term as Chairman of the Brockton Republican City Committee. He is a former Treasurer and former Vice Chairman of the Massachusetts Republican Party, and is at present  a member of the Massachusetts Republican State Committee.

Harvard Club gala is a huge success!

According to all reports, upwards of 50 members braved the rain on February 26 to take a bus to the Harvard Club in Boston, where Chairman Larry Novak treated them to a party. The following account of the event says it all:

"I would personally like to thank Larry Novak for his generosity in inviting the Brockton Republican City Committee to the Harvard Club in Boston! I had a wonderful time as did my mom. The food was beyond delectable and the view was incredible! Though the weather wasn't the best, that didn't dampen anyone's good time. It gave me a wonderful opportunity to talk to members of the City Committee whom I don't get to see as often as I would like and also to meet some of the new members of Ward 7. It was a wonderful night and an opportunity of a lifetime!

Larry, again, thank you!

Marissa E. Lima

Ward 7 Chairman".

Record turnout returns Novak and Falcone to State Committee

A large turnout of voters on February 5 granted Larry Novak and Jeanie Falcone four more years on the Massachusetts Republican State Committee. Mrs. Falcone with 63% of the vote handily defeated contender Janette Packard, while Attorney Novak's 53% gave him a narrow edge over his opponent David Heidke. While Heidke carried Easton and East Bridgewater, tied in Hanson, and lost by only two votes in Halifax, Ms. Packard failed to carry Brockton or any of the suburban towns. Surprisingly, there were 10% more total votes cast on the male side of the ballot than on the female side, perhaps indicating more intense interest in the race for the male seat, which was hotly contested in a costly campaign. In the end, Brockton and Hanover voters joined to hand Mr. Novak his victory. Congratulations to the two winners!

                     Brockton Republican City Committee meets

Forty-five members of the Brockton Republican City Committee met at the Country Inn and Suites in Brockton on January 31. Below, Ward 1 School Committee member Tom Minichiello made a point before the candidates' presentations:

The four candidates for seats on the Massachusetts State Republican Committee then presented their qualifications and visions in a lively give-and-take:

Left to right: Larry Novak, Janette Packard, David Heidke, and Jeanie Falcone gave their views. Questions from the members led to further elucidation and, on occasion, to sometimes heated exchanges between the candidates. Those present showed almost-unprecedented interest in the issues facing the local, state, and national Republican party.

                                 Is John Kerry vulnerable?

At least three Massachusetts contenders think so - but the field has now narrowed to only two:

Left to right: (1) Kevin Scott , a businessman from Wakefield, initially declared his candidacy for the U.S. senate.  He has reportedly withdrawn his candidacy and endorsed (2) Jim Ogonowski, a farmer from Dracut, who formally declared his candidacy on January 28. He lost narrowly last year in his battle against Democrat Niki Tsongas for a seat in Congress. (3) Jeff Beatty, Reagan-era veteran from Harwich, has declared his candidacy and has already spoken at Republican events in Easton and Brockton.

So Republican choices of candidates will not end on February 5 this year, but will extend into the fall.

Novak Announces success in recruitment drive!

Chairman Larry Novak has announced that his recruiting drive has given the Brockton Republican City Committee the highest organization rate of any city in Massachusetts. He has signed up a total of 230 candidates for the February membership election, or 94% of the allowed 245. Brockton's closest competitor in this regard is Attleboro, with a rate of only 28%. Furthermore, by raising more than $1,950.00 in 2007, Brockton's Republican Committee surpassed the fundraising of all Massachusetts cities.

Rambling personal thoughts of your writer:

Do Geraldine Creedon and Christine Canavan think we're stupid?Well, they may be right. They keep getting re-elected.

They both voted along with ALL the Democrats from the South Shore for a fraudulent bill that would "exempt" some senior citizens from the additional real estate tax to be paid if a Proposition 2-1/2 override is passed. But look at the bill closely, please.

To be eligible for the rebate, low-income seniors would have to be paying more than 10% of their income on real estate taxes. In Brockton, their home would have to be assessed at about 11 times their annual income. In most cases, they would already be facing foreclosure or bankruptcy. A family with $25,000 income would have to be living in a $275,000 house. A family with $50,000 income would have to be living in a $550,000 house. How often does that happen?

When you get down to cases, almost nobody would be eligible for the so-called exemption. People in these situations would already be well into senility, or lying to the IRS, or extremely unfortunate.

The whole purpose of the bill is to mislead seniors into thinking the young working people are going to pay part of their tax bill if they approve an override, and they will be comforted into thinking they're helping their community. So presumably they won't oppose an override. But, none of them will be eligible for the tax break!

Please let all these Democrat Representatives know we see through the deception and will not accept their low opinion of our intelligence.

For the historical record, we are posting the2008 campaign literature of Alan D. Greene and of Maria Carey Lallemand, candidates for Vice Chairman of the Brockton Republican City Committee:

For all those anonymous people, you are cowards. If you are going to publicly attack me, you could at least sign your name unless you are not telling the truth. At least I stand behind my record and my words. What have you done? How have you contributed to the "good of the BRCC"? Not much I'm guessing, you can't even attach your name to your comments, cowards. I'm also guessing all your work for the party is also anonymous.

As for you Chester you should should tell the truth for a change. On the Oct 6, 2005 meeting, a secret vote was called for and was overwhelmingly defeated as was the vote for Larry Novak to step down. "TRY TO TELL THE TRUTH".

You complain that the BRCC doesn't meet monthly, after three consecutive monthly meetings without a quorum Rita Kechejian made a motion to suspend meetings until we got enough members tp attend meetings.

"TRY TO TELL THE TRUTH" at the last meeting of the BRCC Executive board you were admonished for running our website with a biased against Larry Novak, my self and Janette Packard. By the way that website was paid for by Larry Novak. "TRY TO TELL THE TRUTH".

You telephone campaigns using Joe MacDonald and Andy Card worked so well(NOT), that Larry Novak still got re-elected by over 650 votes. Get your receipts out and tell us how much money was spent to defeat Larry Novak and figured out how much it cost per vote.
Chet you are a loser again. "TRY TO TELL THE TRUTH"

When you were running Marissa Lima's campaign I donated $125.00 and offered another $100.00 so that you could send out more flyers for her. Your answer was "I don't want tostuff any more envelopes" to quote you verbatim.
I don't know of any candidates committee that refuses more donations. OOOOOPS, I'm sorry, only if Chet Claff is managing it.
You LOOOOOOSSSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"TRY TO TELL THE TRUTH"

February 10, 2008

Dear Fellow Brockton City Committee Member,

I am pleased to report that our city committee will select a leadership team in the coming month and I would be honored to be nominated and potentially chosen as the committee vice chair for the next term.

It is indeed a season of opportunity to help to make our goals come true as a committee.

It has been far too long since our city has had Republican representation in the State House of Representatives. Moreover, it has been a huge challenge to get Republicans elected as local officials.

It's been stated that government has a tendency to act as if it has no customers, no challengers. Well in 2008, we have the opportunity to not only show local and state government that it indeed has customers, but in Brockton, those customers are Right!

So What Can We Do?
In the coming months, we'll be discussing strategy, completing our new statement of guiding principles, and beginning the quest to put forth quality candidates for each and every position on the ballot.

It's never too early to start thinking, talking, and encouraging those around you to get involved and participate in the movement. In fact, we indeed MUST start now!

I ask that each and every one of you make a point to attend our next meeting, at which we will re-organize, and, bring at least one friend, co-worker, associate, or loved one that believes in our vision and wants to be part of the movement to this or the next regular meeting.

What are we fighting for?
My belief is that overall our goals should be:

Ö Growing our economy
Ö Demanding fiscal responsibility

    • Ensuring safety for our children
    • Obtaining affordable housing for Brockton seniors
    • Enabling local control for decisions that matter most to our city and our region
    • Also, we need to be thinking about quality people to approach as candidates and bring those ideas to the meetings

What would I work to accomplish?
If elected as your vice chair my immediate priorities will include:

Working with the Committee Chair to breathe new life into the committee

    • Establish regular meetings
    • Establish a candidate recruiting working sub-committee
    • Establish a member recruiting working sub-committee
    • Take advantage of our opportunity to recruit new age republicans
    • Develop a quarterly newsletter to Brockton Republicans
    • Incorporate fundraising opportunities through our website and community media opportunities.

I look forward to watching our membership grow, our energy spread, and seeing all of you (perhaps with guests!) at upcoming meetings

If you think change can happen - you're RIGHT! Thank you for your support,

Maria Carey Lallemand

Friendly advice from a neighbor – Just say no to Brockton tax increase

To the editor of The Enterprise:

Wake up, Brockton taxpayers! Do you folks have money trees growing in your backyard? I don't think so. Vote no on any Proposition 2-1/2 override, because voting yes gives the city of Brockton an open checkbook using your hard-earned money.

The latest Proposition 2-1/2 proposal on Beacon Hill is to exclude certain seniors from having to pay for future overrides, thereby encouraging more overrides to pass if seniors don't go out and vote. Let's get all municipal employees to pay more toward their health care; after all, they do have the "Rolls Royce" of health insurance. If the Brockton override passes, it will be business as usual. City and school officials are using scare tactics and propaganda to frighten you into voting for the override. The "yes" voters, (the self-absorbed me-first generation) have absolutely no respect or concern for their elders, senior citizens, or young couples trying to keep their homes. The majority of your tax dollar supports the greedy school system which has absolutely zero accountability when it comes to spending our hard-earned dollar, (After all, it's "for the children").

I don't think so. Why don't we start educating our children and ourselves about the reality of what it's like to live on a fixed income? Why don't we explain to our children that we are unable to support an override because there are elders in our community who can't afford food or medication, let alone an increase in their taxes? Whatever happened to "just say no"? Remember, folks, an override is not just temporary; it's forever.
